Page 8 Stone County Enterprise * Wednesday, JUNE 4, 2003 WWW. Magnolia Volunteer Fire Department n By Suzanne Ladner Special to the Enterprise Who and what is a vohmteer firefighter? Did you know that you may speak with a volunteer firefighter on a daily basis and not even know it? These people are men and women of all ages who give freely' of their time and energy every day of their lives to help make our courtly a better and safer place to live. These men and women spend hours every month training and retraining, testing and going over equipment to be absolutely certain that a.t f6r every minute in a day their equipment is m perfect working order and they are able to handle any situation. The Magnolia Department trains every Thursday evening and does extra maintenance and training on the weekends. Two members of our department vol- unteer to be "on call" each weekend, giving up their normal actMties to man the station. Not all members of a depart- ment have to be full-fledged firefighters. We have several people who serve their depart- ment in other capacities, such as secretarial duties and fund rais- ing, These county departments are funded solely through grants and the fund-raisers that each depamnent puts on. The fire- fighters are not compensated in any way. except for the thank- yous from the folks who have had a need for the departments services. To introduce you to the fire- fighters in our community, we've decided to list our roster of members and their titles. They are, in no particular order: Chief Ray Cruthirds Assistant Chief Richard Martin First Captain/ Training Officer Chris Ladner Second Captain Lonnie Beech Treasurer Mark Cassibry Secreta.
