"Many of these children are suddenly taken away from their homes, and because of circumstances, may not be able to take their belongings with them," said Dr. Marie Heim, who designed and is implementing the volun- teer project. "By provid- ing them with basic neces- sities and items they can enjoy, we are hoping that it makes this difficult time in their lives a little more comfortable." Heim said they are accepting donations of new items or those in good con- dition. Monetary contri- butions are also requested to purchase additional items. Checks can be made payable to Mississippi Department of Human Services (DHS) - for the Children Fund. "Due to the recent increase of children in cus- tody and the economy, DHS depends on the kind- ness and giving of others to help meet the children's needs," Helm said. "There are also many families served and helped by DHS in Stone County without children being brought into custody. They may just need a hand getting by some months. These sur- rival packs will also help them."
